So here is the thing, most times I don’t feel like doing the things that I am supposed to be doing. Like studying for my oral boards, or doing my fellowship modules, or studying my transplant textbooks, or running. I learnt that my feelings can not be trusted. If I would have it my way, I would be lazy everyday, spending the day in my onesie and watching mindless television and eating mangos with salt. The truth is that I am not motivated to study most of the time but I just do it. I remember during my intern year I wore nike socks and a nike sweater as a gentle reminder to just do it. (when you are up at 3:30 am to be able to preround before OR, you need whatever help you can get)
For me, I have to have a plan in order to stay focused on what I need to get done. I plan out my week, month and days. I start out with a month calendar and write down what needs to be done that month and when, all in one page. Then I do my weekly goals every Sunday and every morning I jot down my goals for the day. It takes a few minutes and it saves me so much stress later. I have to write it out and check it off otherwise it won’t get done. Organization is key and blocking time to get what you need done is important. For instance I have a block time for blogging and social media, 45 minutes and that is the only time I can be on twitter, facebook, blogging or instagram. (Otherwise I could spend 12 hours blogging…ha!). When that block time is over I can not spend time on any of these things. I set up what topic I will read that day and I will carry with me and read in between cases or in clinic while waiting for patients and whenever I have chunks of time. The goal is to be done with whatever I assigned myself that day by the end of the day. At times I am super busy and I have to transfer what I don’t get done to the following day schedule, which is ok. It gets done. Without a plan I am lost and not productive.
Never wait for the right time to do something, the right time will likely not come. Have a plan and carry it out period. Motivation comes from within, you have to motivate yourself to get it done. It’s hard to get started but once you start that chain you often realize that you have momentum to keep going. You just need to push yourself to open that book, to put on those shoes and get out the door or whatever it is. Train yourself to get things done. Stop wasting time doing things that don’t add value to your life. Stop wasting time with people who don’t add value to your life, naysayers who are there to distract you. If they don’t support you and want the best for you, they should be kept at a distance. You don’t have time for friendship drama. Negative things like that weigh you down and its easy to lose focus when you are dealing with drama.
You have to be willing to put in the work, to push yourself, to be self disciplined to achieve the life you want. It ain’t easy but it’s totally worth it!
