My top 10 running tips for beginners

running1There are so many health and mental benefits you get from running. For me it is the easiest form of exercise as I often work very long hours and just have no energy to drive to the gym. I just have to put on my running shoes and go. I do a lot of my problem solving on my runs. Once you make it a habit and become consistent, it will become a part of your life and you will wonder how you ever lived life without running.

  1. Invest in a good pair of running shoes (I love asics).
  2.  Run for time not speed or distance (get out and do 10 minutes or 20 minutes or an hour and walk if you must but complete the time).
  3. Consistency is key, run the same time everyday until you have developed a habit (for me if I don’t run first thing in the morning, chances are I won’t; now that its light out earlier it’s perfect for early morning runs).
  4. Stay hydrated, I like a glass of milk shortly before my run and a protein shake after.
  5. Be safe, run in well light areas where there are a lot of people unless you have a running buddy then you can venture out on trails.
  6. Remember to fuel before a run (I have a sensitive stomach so I do a glass of lactaid milk).
  7. Set out your running gear the night before and set your alarm 30 minutes earlier than your normal wake up time and JUST DO IT!!!
  8. Strengthen your core (I do various youtube videos or focus T25).
  9. Use running as a time to catch up on audio books, podcasts, sermons, inspirational talks etc (I am currently listening to behind the knife to prepare of my general surgery oral boards).
  10. Set running goals that are accomplishable (my current goal being that at times I am working 110 hrs/week is 16 miles a week).
